Quo vadis, Free Software?

In his escape from Rome, Peter encounters Jesus and asks him, Jesus, Quo vadis? (“where are you going?“) Jesus responded, “Back to Rome, to be crucified again”. Peter follows him, ends up being captured and crucified upside down.

(Painting: Domine quo vadis? (1602) by Annibale Carracci. Source Wikimedia)

Two thousand years have passed, yet those who defy the status quo are still being prosecuted and crucified, one way or another.

Too much hypocrisy and lack of empathy

The prosecution and public lynching that Richard Stallman, creator of the Free Software movement, has suffered in the last year and half is unparalleled. Many of those who used to praise his work and figure, are now taking the first row in the lapidation of the heretic.

Richard Stallman might not be the best in social interactions, but neither am I. Richard is not politically correct either. Some things he has said can be controversial and even disturbing. But that does not make him a criminal or a monster. In more than one occasion, I’ve noticed that I’ve misunderstood his words after talking to him or re-reading the article.

We all are imperfect beings, with imperfect genes, living in an imperfect society. We come from different cultural, social, educational and generational backgrounds. I find this enriching and fascinating. Yet, there is still too much hypocrisy and lack of empathy in our society.

Let me share a short personal story. In 2018 I was invited to give a talk at LibrePlanet. I flew from Spain to Boston, and I was excited to meet with the colleagues from the community, so I signed up to the “Welcome dinner”. To my surprise, I got this response by email upon arrival:

"The Welcome Dinner is for all women, gender queer, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people interested in free software. If you don't identify as such, we kindly request that you don't attend the dinner this year."

So I checked whether all the list elements, looking for latino, hispanic, vegan, …. but no luck… after a long haul flight, I found myself excluded from the event. Where is the diversity, where is the inclusion, where is the empathy? Ironically, I found out that the very same person who sent me the email excluding me from the dinner is now part of the debunking campaign against RMS.

Let he who is free of sin cast the first stone

Who are we to judge? On what moral grounds are they judging Richard Stallman?

Discrimination on the basis of species is as terrible as any other form of discrimination (sex, race, age..). Those who eat meat are complicit of the daily holocaust of millions of sentient beings. Those who drink milk are complicit of the systematic rape, slavery and murder of millions of persons who have the same right to live in freedom and dignity as we humans. In addition, non-vegans are responsible in the climate change emergency, pandemics and other terrible side effects of factory farming.

I am convinced that many of those who are judging RMS are meat eaters and consume dairy products. So, before they accuse him for something that he might have said, they should take a look at themselves and their ethical / moral status, for what they are actually doing. I also think that many of them would not have joined this evil campaign if they knew how much pain and suffering it has caused to Richard.

Divide and conquer. The attempt to eradicate the Free Software movement

The existing plutocracy controls de media and distorts reality. The panem et circenses formula works great in creating a numb, docile society. Their mass control devices and programs activate the dopaminergic reward pathways on the person brain, creating a short but intense feeling of instant gratification through selfies, filters, likes. You willingly provide them your personal information. They know where you are, they know what you do. They will also make a lot of money selling your information to others who will refine the mind control process. This becomes a closed loop.

They have gradually eradicated critical reasoning. Activism and social justice are now forbidden terms. “Free Software” is now “Open Source”. To be a cool programmer and a good citizen, you have to share your code “Where the world builds Software“. It’s a proprietary platform, but this fact would not make a difference to you anymore at this point. You have become part of them, and your principles about the initial Free Software movement have faded away.

After creating the “idyllic community”, it was time for them to find a common enemy. The witch-hunt started by debunking the creator of the Free Software movement and then anyone that would defy the status quo. Vilifying RMS on the news and social media was an easy task for them, provided that they control most of the media and that they already counted with an “army” ready to burn heretics. The army members did the dirty job for them, proudly posting on their timelines how they contributed to the ruthless public mobbing, lynching and lapidation of someone who most of them, didn’t even know. The rest is history.

Time to hit the reset button

No doubt that the Free Software Foundation and the movement of free software and free culture is badly injured. The enemies of social justice and freedom in our society have tried to eliminate the Free Software Foundation and divide the community.

Yet, we are strong and resilient. Let’s come together, reunite and return even stronger. Society is facing very challenging moments, and we need the Libre Software movement to be a reference of evolution, diversity, respect and inclusion. The enemies of freedom and equity want us divided, so they gain control. We can not let that happen again.

Let us all take some time for self-reflection, to get rid of any resentment. Let us find room for forgiveness to our fellow members of the Free Software movement and hit the reset button. Let us put aside the confrontation among us that will take us nowhere.

Let us also support financially the Libre Software community. Most Libre Software projects and organizations depend on the financial contributions, and they should be able to grow with the support of their individual members alone. That will bring independence from the corporation.

Our mission as individuals and members of the Libre Software movement goes way beyond programming. The code that we write in C or Python must also be the source of an optimistic message to this and upcoming generations around the world. A genuine and honest message of freedom, equity, compassion, empathy and solidarity.

Happy and healthy hacking!

We are very pleased to announce that the University of West Indies has joined the GNU Health‘s Community !
GNU Solidario and UWI are starting this cooperation working closely on GNU Health’s development and deployment in the region.
The University of the West Indies is a dynamic, international institution serving the countries of the Commonwealth Caribbean (Anguilla, Antigua/Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, the British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Christopher-Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago and the Turks and Caicos Islands).
UWI’s mission is to unlock West Indian potential for economic and cultural growth by high quality teaching and research aimed at meeting critical regional needs, by providing West Indian society with an active intellectual centre and by linking the West Indian community with distinguished centres of research and teaching in the Caribbean and overseas.
UWI recognises that as a regional university supported by the West Indian peoples, and as the sole local organ equipped to meet local requirements and to relate its own developmental programmes to them, it should give priority to regional needs (…).
It’s wonderful to see how the GNU Health’s community is growing. We need to deliver more Health and Education with Free Software !

Please find below Luis Falcón’s interview about GNU Health in opensource.com

In 2006, Luis Falcón founded GNU Health, a free health information system that recently recieved the “Best Project of Social Benefit” award given by the Free Software Foundation.
GNU Solidario is the non-profit NGO behind GNU Health, started as a free software project for Primary Care facilities in rural areas and developing countries. Since then, it has evolved into a full Hospital and Health Information System used by the United Nations, public hospitals and Ministries of Health (such as in Entre Rios, Argentina), and private institutions around the globe.
GNU Health/Solidario and the United Nations International Institute for Global Health—UNU IIGH—signed an agreement in 2011 to train health professionals around the world on the system, as a way of promoting free software in public health, especially in emerging economies. Since then, both organizations have been cooperating and expanding their network of partners to deliver health in a universal way; which, also works towards the UN’s Millenium Development Goals.
Q: What are the top 3 ways that GNU Health is better than a proprietary system in use now?
A: GNU Health is an official GNU program and community-based project, so…
Administrators and providers can download GNU Health for free, study it, then adapt it to their needs.
There’s no vendor lock-in, because there’s no vendor. There are no hidden costs or upgrade scripts. Everyone will always be able to upgrade to the latest version for free.
There is an international community of support around GNU Health. We have community GNU Health demo server, documentation at WikiBooks, IRC channels, mailing lists, bug tracking systems, and a development environment.
Q: How does it go beyond cost?
A: Freedom and ethics.
GNU Health evolves from the talent, feedback, contributions of a constantly growing community. There are already academic institutions, like the United Nations and its International Institute for Global Health, teaching GNU Health to health professionals around the world. GNU Solidario, the non-profit organization behind GNU Health, delivers health and education with free software. We work with the United Nations and other institutions to provide primary care and preventive medicine and other of the MDG (Millenium Development Goals). For instance, we have a GNU Health module specific to MDG6, helping tof ight Malaria, HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis. GNU Solidario also hosts the International Workshop on eHealth in Emerging Economies, a yearly conference focused on free software on eHealth, and how it can help organizations to improve the lives of their people. We have guests and participants from Doctors without Borders, United Nations, UNESCO, Red Cross, academic institutions, and health ministries. As you can see, it goes far beyond free of cost.
Q: Does GNU Health work in tandem with existing health systems or does it replace them?
A: It can do both.
In terms of health center management, GNU Health combines and integrates patient information from their electronic medical records (demographics, evaluations, medical history, labs, etc.) with the health center’s processes (accounting, human resources, stock, supply chain management, etc.). Any uncoupled systems (accounting, HR, EMR, SCM, etc.) can be replaced in order to optimize the resources and processes into one system.
GNU Health can also interoperate with other free software healthcare projects. For example, GNU Health can store patient medical images (MRIs, Xrays, CT, etc.) locally or connect directly to a PACS server using DICOM viewers like Ginkgo or Aeskulap. Interoperability in a hospital environment is a must and free software provides the tools to achieve more.
Q: Have most health administrators been eager or reluctant to implement an open source health system?
A: We have implemented GNU Health in both public hospitals and private institutions.
And they love the idea of having a system that belongs to them. GNU Health is a community-based project, so they are not tied to a software vendor; there are no licenses, hidden costs, or vendor lock-ins.
Q: Do providers have to buy new equipment and hire IT professionals to implement GNU Health?
A: It depends on the size and complexity of the center.
Hospital Information Systems deal with many aspects (accounting, stock, clinical records, suppliers, epidemiology, laboratory, pharmacy, security and access control, etc.). So, it’s no surprise that a well planned and designed project implemented by a well-trained local team will produce a high-quality product with a high level of sustainability.
Q: Why do you feel GNU Health benefits more patients, caregivers, and doctors than current systems?
A: In addition to being free software…
The system focuses on the human factor and takes a holistic approach to the patient—making concepts like health promotion, disease prevention, family medicine, and social determinants of disease top priorities. From a technical point of view, scalability and adaptability are key. Today there are over 20 different language and localization teams, making it easy for anyone to use GNU Health in their region.
Q: Does GNU Health provide high scalability?
A: GNU Health provides solutions for small offices and large hospitals.
The system’s modular design allows them to adapt its functionality to the complexity of their health center. GNU Health runs on top of the fantastic PostgreSQL database and we can implement it in a centralized or distributed environment. Plus, GNUHealth makes use of Python and Tryton frameworks; both are very scalable.
Q: Do you suggest other open source solutions to health providers and centers?
A: Absolutely.
Systems like Aeskulap or Ginkgo are excellent DICOM viewers. Bika Labs is a LIMS that can connect directly to GNU Health laboratory module. Tryton provides a robust and scalable framework to build enterprise solutions.
Q: What issues do we all need to better understand about our health?
A: Health is an issue for us all, whether we think about it much or not.
I encourage people to ask their politicians to adopt free software in the healthcare sector, because health is a public good. And thus, all health information systems should be based on free software. Public health and propietary software are antagonistic.
We, as individuals, should demand free software in our public administrations. And health professionals should know about free software and how it can help them, their patients, and their caregivers. Next time you go to the doctor, please tell her or him about the benefits of free software and write them a prescription for health.gnu.org!

After few hectic weeks organizing IWEEE 2013, we are back to normal!

This year we had speakers from: Doctors without Borders, Red Cross, Ministry of Health of El Salvador, UNESCO University of La Laguna and CARITAS, Partners for Health NGO- Tbilisi State Medical University, ZOHE among others.

Luis Falcón and Thang Dao  – Opening Session

I want to thank each and every one of the speakers for attending the event, it was a pleasure to share time and knowledge with you!

I also thank all the attendees for coming, I hope you have found the event as interesting as I did.

As you know, the slogan of the event was Social Justice. In these years, what has moved and continues to move GNU Solidario’s work, it has been the necessity to get justice for the needy, as normally justice is not for the poors…

Thang Dao – Doctors without Borders

The political and economic situation that we are experiencing today is showing us how it is increasingly necessary a health system that is not a privilege just for few, but rather a RIGHT for all !

Group picture
As Luis Falcón said in the opening session, today’s developed countries are as needed as the underprivileged. Luis Falcón stated in a previous interview:

… we have to keep fighting every day for a more just and inclusive society, with a universal, free, public health care system … Luis Falcón

The presentations showed the different realities and solutions available nowadays in different regions / continents. The common feature of all was the desire to share and find solutions that can improve the current situation.

Carlos Juan Martín Pérez – Ministry of Health El Salvador
GNU Solidario‘s mission is to provide education and health with Free Software, as Luis Falcón said:

… Free software is, and should be, synonymous with social activism and ethics … Luis Falcón

Richard Stallman – Free Software Foundation
To emphasize the benefits of free software, attended the conference Richard Stallman, founder of the Free Software Foundation, creator of GNU/Linux and Free Software activist. Stallman gave a master lecture on: “Free Software …. Defending your freedom” during which he stressed on the fact that we are still far from the implementation of free software and that most people remain slaves of proprietary softwares.

Aymón López Márquez – Bubble Software Assotiation
The event was a great time of learning and reflection. Personally we got the chance to see different realities, the great work that lies behind many organizations and the need to continue promoting the use of free software, particularly in areas like education and health.

Licino Kustra Mano – epSOS
A special thanks to Miguel Falcón,Tily Martín and Mariola Falcón for the logistical / personal support and donations, without you this event would have been impossible. Thank you!
Thanks to the media that were present and spread the event.

Jesús González Herrera – Ingenia
Change does not happen by chance, it happens by choice … That’s why we ask you to continue supporting us in our solidarity campaign in favor of the needy and help us continue on the path we have started a few years ago towards the change we want to make.

Until next time!
GNU Solidario’s team.

Zviad Kirtava – Partners for Health NGO. Tbilisi State Medical University

Pedro Herranz Porcio – CARITAS

Nicholas Wilkie – Doctors without Borders

Richard Stallman: Free Software … Defending your Freedom

Olga Ferrer-Roca – UNESCO University of La Laguna
Gracias !

Benjamine Budiman – Cruz Roja

Luis Falcón and Sebastián Marró – GNU Solidario
