Hundreds of researchers and practitioners from all around the world gathered in Copenhagen, Denmark, for the “14th World Congress on Medical Health and Informatics” (MedInfo 2013). A triennial event, MedInfo provides both a high quality scientific exchange, as well as an opportunity for formal meetings and networking.

This particular edition, jointly hosted by the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) and one of its Member Societies, targetted at a thorough debate on conducting medical informatics by converging technologies, conveying sciences and connecting people. As Prof. Antoine Geissbuhler, MD, President of the IMIA, said: “It is about leaders of the community charting the way forwards in the current challenging seas, about understanding how to blend diverse and advanced tools and techniques to provide better science and better services, about acquiring, sharing and disseminating state of the art knowledge, and about fostering useful synergies between people through smart information systems”.

GNU Health and Free Software in the spotlight

Luis Falcon from our very own GNU Solidario, attended the congress to present the GNU Health platform during the Mini-Symposium “Care for the World. Collaboration, Openness, Transparency and Trust as Prerequisite for High Quality, Effective and Efficient Health Care “.

Hans Demski presenting Medfloss

Among the authors of this presentation were also Thomas Karopka, Syed Mohamed Aljunid, Nurhizam Safie, Hans Demski and Kjeld Lisby.

This mini-symposium portrayed two different methodologies to tackle the main Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) for health systems in the Global South: reducing child mortality, improving maternal health and combatting HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases. Both approaches aim to providing high-quality, efficient and effective health care through Free and Open Source Software (FLOSS) and Open & User Driven Innovation in a global context.

Paul Turner at eHealth for People Like Us workshop

Moreover, Falcon also participated in the workshop “Moving Beyond eHealth Systems for ‘People Like Us’”, along with Paul Turner, Andre Kushniruk, Pernille Bertelsen and Chris Showell. This interactive workshop was as much a scientific innovation as it was a humbling experience, allowing all attendees to experience the gap between some convoluted designs of eHealth systems and average or disadvantaged users. “People Like us” (PLU) is a thinking tool and a conceptualization of two archetypal categories of potential users: one group, highly skilled and motivated, and a second one, much less engaged with topics around health and healthcare. The different solutions offered at the end of the workshop resulted from collective thinking and diverse participation.

Indicators from a roadmap towards high-quality healthcare

Pivot in MedInfo 2013 is to coalesce around key issues in facing the future of health and technology. For this reason, Luis Falcon, Thomas Karopka and other members of P { margin-bottom: 0.08in; }A:link { }the Free Libre and Open Source Health Informatics Working Group (OSWG) of the IMIA agreed to generate a new system called “Common Health Indicator Reporting Interface”. This initiative brought together both experts and interested individuals from manifold areas of expertise to contribute in the potential application of open source solutions within their domains. Furthermore, the team at GNU Solidario confirmed that GNU Health would be incorporating this standard. P { margin-bottom: 0.08in; }A:linkP { margin-bottom: 0.08in; }A:link {

After few hectic weeks organizing IWEEE 2013, we are back to normal!

This year we had speakers from: Doctors without Borders, Red Cross, Ministry of Health of El Salvador, UNESCO University of La Laguna and CARITAS, Partners for Health NGO- Tbilisi State Medical University, ZOHE among others.

Luis Falcón and Thang Dao  – Opening Session

I want to thank each and every one of the speakers for attending the event, it was a pleasure to share time and knowledge with you!

I also thank all the attendees for coming, I hope you have found the event as interesting as I did.

As you know, the slogan of the event was Social Justice. In these years, what has moved and continues to move GNU Solidario’s work, it has been the necessity to get justice for the needy, as normally justice is not for the poors…

Thang Dao – Doctors without Borders

The political and economic situation that we are experiencing today is showing us how it is increasingly necessary a health system that is not a privilege just for few, but rather a RIGHT for all !

Group picture
As Luis Falcón said in the opening session, today’s developed countries are as needed as the underprivileged. Luis Falcón stated in a previous interview:

… we have to keep fighting every day for a more just and inclusive society, with a universal, free, public health care system … Luis Falcón

The presentations showed the different realities and solutions available nowadays in different regions / continents. The common feature of all was the desire to share and find solutions that can improve the current situation.

Carlos Juan Martín Pérez – Ministry of Health El Salvador
GNU Solidario‘s mission is to provide education and health with Free Software, as Luis Falcón said:

… Free software is, and should be, synonymous with social activism and ethics … Luis Falcón

Richard Stallman – Free Software Foundation
To emphasize the benefits of free software, attended the conference Richard Stallman, founder of the Free Software Foundation, creator of GNU/Linux and Free Software activist. Stallman gave a master lecture on: “Free Software …. Defending your freedom” during which he stressed on the fact that we are still far from the implementation of free software and that most people remain slaves of proprietary softwares.

Aymón López Márquez – Bubble Software Assotiation
The event was a great time of learning and reflection. Personally we got the chance to see different realities, the great work that lies behind many organizations and the need to continue promoting the use of free software, particularly in areas like education and health.

Licino Kustra Mano – epSOS
A special thanks to Miguel Falcón,Tily Martín and Mariola Falcón for the logistical / personal support and donations, without you this event would have been impossible. Thank you!
Thanks to the media that were present and spread the event.

Jesús González Herrera – Ingenia
Change does not happen by chance, it happens by choice … That’s why we ask you to continue supporting us in our solidarity campaign in favor of the needy and help us continue on the path we have started a few years ago towards the change we want to make.

Until next time!
GNU Solidario’s team.

Zviad Kirtava – Partners for Health NGO. Tbilisi State Medical University

Pedro Herranz Porcio – CARITAS

Nicholas Wilkie – Doctors without Borders

Richard Stallman: Free Software … Defending your Freedom

Olga Ferrer-Roca – UNESCO University of La Laguna
Gracias !

Benjamine Budiman – Cruz Roja

Luis Falcón and Sebastián Marró – GNU Solidario
