Last week I was invited to the “62nd IFMSA (International Federation of Medical Students Associations) General Assembly”.
Santiago de Chile view
The Conference took place at the Catholic University of Chile, in Santiago, between August 01-07th, 2013. This year, as part of the recently established “ISfTeH & IFMSA Partnership”, the ISfTeH (International Society of Telemedicine & eHealth) organized an “eHealth Symposium”, on August 1st.
Dr. Etienne, Director of OPS-OMS and Dr. Jaime Mañalich Health Minister of Chile at the Opening Ceremony and Dinner Gala
I was invited as an ISfTeH FLOSS Working Group representative, together with Mr. Frank Lievens and Mr. Adolfo Sparenberg, ISfTeH Board Members.
The “ISfTeH & IFMSA eHealth Symposium”, on August 1st, counted with both our local and remote presentations by very active and recognized ISfTeH members: Dr. Etienne Saliez, Dr. Monika Hübler, Eng. Thomas Karopka.
Dr. Etienne, Director of OPS-OMS at the Opening Ceremony
On August 2nd we attended 2 sessions:
– IFMSA GA WG Session on Public Health Strategies: Where I presented the GNU Health Project and Adolfo Sparenberg presented the Public Telecardiology Project RS State/Brazil. The focus of this session was to introduce new opportunities and strategies which can contribute to the improvement of public health assistance. Around 40 IFMSA delegates, representing different countries, were part of the audience.
Sebastián Marró – GNU Health – AIFMSA GA WG Session on Public Health Strategies
– IFMSA Telemedicine Session- Round table meeting at the Catholic University of Chile: This activity was characterized as a practical activity aiming to identify students interested in telehealth matters and also as an attempt to organize a group of IFMSA national members for the establishment of an “eHealth working group”.
Sebastián Marró with IFMSA LORMA Maria Aroca
Sebastián Marró with Mr. Frank Lievens and Mr. Adolfo Sparenberg at the Opening Ceremony
I would like to thank Frank Lievens and Adolfo Sparenberg for inviting me to take part of this important activity jointly promoted by the ISfTeH and IFMSA and gave me the opportunity to introduce GNU Health and the Free Software concept to students from all over the world.

We are very pleased to announce that the University of West Indies has joined the GNU Health‘s Community !
GNU Solidario and UWI are starting this cooperation working closely on GNU Health’s development and deployment in the region.
The University of the West Indies is a dynamic, international institution serving the countries of the Commonwealth Caribbean (Anguilla, Antigua/Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, the British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Christopher-Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago and the Turks and Caicos Islands).
UWI’s mission is to unlock West Indian potential for economic and cultural growth by high quality teaching and research aimed at meeting critical regional needs, by providing West Indian society with an active intellectual centre and by linking the West Indian community with distinguished centres of research and teaching in the Caribbean and overseas.
UWI recognises that as a regional university supported by the West Indian peoples, and as the sole local organ equipped to meet local requirements and to relate its own developmental programmes to them, it should give priority to regional needs (…).
It’s wonderful to see how the GNU Health’s community is growing. We need to deliver more Health and Education with Free Software !

English version from Luis Falcon’s blog

From Luis Falcon`s blog:

I’m proud to announce GNU Health 1.6 series !

This series brings a lot of exciting features, both from the technical and functional point of views.
On the technical side, the most important one is the compatibility with Tryton 2.4, and the demo database, so you can test it with data.

On the functional side, improvements in the gynecology module, especially in terms of screening (mammography, PAP tests, colposcopies… ) and history taking.
There has been major changes in the services and billing functionality, making easy the tracking of all the services done to a patient, and what would be subject to invoicing.

Evaluations per doctor chart in GNU Health

Some of the features in the 1.6 series, in brief :
  • Compatible with Tryton 2.4
  • Full Patient clinical history reporting in LibreOffice
  • Included demo database with over 500 patients
  • Realtime charts and statistics graphics
  • Automatic  doctor assignment in patient evaluations
  • Add Gynecological Screening History – Mammography, PAP and colposcopy
  • Improve patient evaluation , differential diagnosis and secondary conditions
  • Add disease groups, very useful for epidemiology
  • Better patient and contact tracking
  • Initial Tuberculosis lab tests, included in the MDG (Millennium Development Goal # 6 ) module.
We have also included the Health services module,
Health Services form in GNU Healt
This new module allows to group all the services done to a patient, in either ambulatory or inpatient settings. The module will give the health center the possibility to also invoice selected services to a specific party (patient, insurance company .. ). Since the services are linked to products, the health center will keep a detailed record of the drugs and consumables used. They will also be able to relate the lab orders.

Thank you to all of you who have contributed to this new version of GNU Health. Thanks to the Tryton community for the great Tryton 2.4; to my colleagues from Thymbra for developing the graphics / reporting module (Sebastián), working on the documenation and testing (Cristina and Selene) and, of course, to all the GNU Health and GNU community for adopting and hosting our project !
