  •  NIDA (National Institute on Drug Abuse) categorization, descriptions and effects of most important recreational drugs
  • Administration routes
  • Commercial and street names
  • Dr. Henningfield’s drug rating / score on :
    • Withdrawal
    • Reinforcement
    • Tolerance
    • Dependence
    • Intoxication

    • Additional fields to rank the toxicity and addiction levels of the drug
    • Special indicator for Intravenous (IV) users

In addition, new lifestyle All these extra indicators and functionality will help the health professional to better In addition, I have enhanced the tobacco and alcohol sections, with extra input fields.

The information will help the health professional and social workers to improve the prevention and treatment of the patient, as well as to have better epidemiological information on the prevalence and incidence of different addictions.

In this version of Medical  we have added important hospital functionality like the inpatient admission administration.

The module “medical_inpatient” concentrates the main functionality to :

    – Make bed reservations
    – Check  availability
    – Graphically manage the hospital or health cernet beds in wards and or rooms.

Medical allows to manage bed assignments for different types of admissions (routine, periodic, maternity, emergencies, ..), for the specific hospital department.

calendar for hospital bed and patient management

In this view, it’s easy to look for patient’s locations and status in the hospital. The colors visually differentiate the type of admissions.

We have also improve other sections, like vaccinations. Thanks to Andrew Gledhill (NHS) who proposed the addition of the vaccine lot and expiration date. Actually, the vaccine is integrated to the product, so all the production lot, traceability, and procurement is automated. Special controls for vaccine expiration dates have been put in place now.

Finally, this version includes the translation to Vietnamese (thanks to Phong Nguyen) of all the modules !

You can find a detailed description of changes in the Changelog file (http://medical.sf.net/Changelog)

You can download this latest version from Sourceforge of from the European Community Open Source Observatory (OSOR)

Please report any suggestions or issues you find to our mailining lists or bug tracking system.

Just got back from LinuxCon 2010 Brazil, (thank you Linux Foundation for inviting me ! ) where I was the speaker for Medical : Benefits of Implementing a Free Hospital and Health Information System.

Linus Torvalds and Luis Falcón at LinuxCon 2010

The event was great, I got the chance to see again my Brazilian friends, like Corinto Meffe, who is doing a great job on the public software portal. Corinto was the one who included Medical in the community of the Software Publico Brasileiro.

Corinto Meffe (Brazilian government ), Marcelo Moreno (Ginga), Tatiana Al-Chueyr (In-vesalius), Luis Falcón (Medical) and  Ricardo Amorim (codecommunity) at LinuxCon 2010 Brasil

I also talked to Linus Torvalds about the GNU Solidario organization, and the countries we are currently working.

I am quite happy with the fact of having LinuxCon in LatinAmerica. This was the first year of the conference in South America and I’m looking forward to see more people and companies of LatinAmerica and Spain next year.

The same group with Francine and Rainer Kruger (Pandorga Linux)

You can find the paper and more pics of the event at the GNU Solidario Site or in the new GNU Solidario social network of at Amazee (http://www.amazee.com/gnusolidario). While you are there, just join the team !

In this new version of Medical, we have improved the installation; the signs and symptoms in the patient examination; and the functionality on health promotion and disease prevention.

    Installation :

Medical 0.0.51 has now a “Medical Center profile” that include the most important functionality modules, so you don’t have to install one by one. It will be done automatically during the installation.

This will include the core module, admissions, lifestyle / sexuality, socioeconomics, diseases (ICD-10), laboratory, gynecology and genetics

    Health Promotion and Disease Prevention

    – Gynecology ( mammography, colposcopy, breast self-examination )
    – Home and car safety
    – Sexuality ( sexual habits, practices and associated risks )

    Signs and Symptoms

The signs and symptoms section on the patient evaluation / physical examination has been extensively revised and improved. Now we count with over 115 signs and symptoms, covering most of the evaluations. This is important not only for the health professional, but also to get good statistical information.

The first International Workshop on e-Health for Emerging Economies – IWEEE 2010 – has been a success.
In these three days, we have had the oportunity to learn the reality from personalities coming all different parts the world: Uganda, Canada, Belgium, United States, Rwanda, Spain, Argentina, Colombia, Germany and Switzerland.
We heard Ans de Jager (War Child) talking about the need of energy for the kids in Northern Uganda; Carlos Travieso (ULPGC) using biometrics to identify aborigins in Costa Rica for Medical purposes; Pedro Herranz (Caritas) explaining the huge gap among the “North and the South”; Dr Caminero discussing the links between poberty and tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS; Cesar Brod and Corinto Meffe (Brazilian Government) talked about how free software is being used in the public sector. Dr. Moses Isyagi explained how they’ve been doing telepathology in rural areas of Uganda. Dr Carmen Martín (Red Cross) talked about the efforts being made to help the elderly and the people with special needs.

On the technical side, Mark Höller and Thomas Karopka (German IT Center) talked about adapting Medical for Nursing and the need for convergence. Norman Young (Clear Canvas) showed us a demo how open source is working in the field of Radiology. Raúl Zambrano (United Nations) talked about the rol of the United Nations Development Program and the importance of free software as a public good. Rayco and Alfonso García (ULPGC – OSL) talked about the COREi project. We had the visit of Dr. Bernardo Agudelo and Juan José Vélez, from the University of Antioquía, Colombia, who demo the use of free software in a red-code protocol. Dr. Etienne Saliez explain the need of having a working group that include multi-disciplinary team of doctors and scientists.

Finally I talked about our NGO, GNU Solidario, and the Medical project in Latin America, Africa and Asia.

The slogan for this congress was “The Human Factor”, a key concept missing from many of other e-Health events. IWEEE 2010 has been focused on the human factor, considering that health is a human right, and that all the contributing factors – education, access to technology, employment, nutrition, family affection, energy, peace, … – must be also met in order to have healthy individuals and societies. The round table discussion among the multi-disciplinary representatives (NGOs, government, church and UN) gave all the participants the opportunity not only to expose their realities, but to discuss possible solutions to the most urgent needs.
Organizing an event like IWEEE is a great challenge, and, even though we had been working non-stop for a year there where high expectations that we had to deliver. Finally, I must say that those expectations have been met, and that we have been asked to organize IWEEE 2011, again in Canary Islands, which we have already started to do. My gratitude to Fundación La Caixa, the University of Las Palmas (specially to Fernando Real ), Consejería de Sanidad (who provided the Hospital Auditorium) , Colegio de Médicos de Las Palmas, Gran Canaria Turism and Innovation Bureau, Cabildo de Gran Canaria ( specially to Carmelo Ramírez ) and to Juan Montero from UNESCO.

My gratitude goes to all of you who have participated and donated your time, experience and knowledge, putting them in the hands who need it most. I’m looking forward to seeing you again in IWEEE 2011.
