Como había anunciado anteriormente, en la última semana de Junio empezó el Asian Tour de GNU Health.

Luis Falcón impartió el Training Oficial de GNU Health en la Universidad de Naciones Unidas (UNU) en Kuala Lumpur.

Ha sido una experiencia muy enriquecedora tanto en el plano personal como profesional. Ni las cenizas ni la burocracia pudieron parar este proyecto !

Quiero agradecer personalmente a todas las personas que integran el proyecto GNU Health así como a los organizadores de la UNU.

Estoy contento de anunciar que la Academia GNU Health  se estrenará el próximo 27 de Junio 2011 con un anfitrión muy especial: United Nations University (UNU), en Kuala Lumpur.

La UNU International Institute for Global Health (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) lleva a cabo la investigación, el desarrollo de capacidad y la difusión de conocimiento relacionada a temas claves de la salud humana.  El objetivo es contribuir con el desarrollo y el refuerzo de marcos de servicios de salud y medidas de política de gestión, particularmente para las personas en países en desarrollo y para apoyar la implementación del enfoque preventivo y de promoción para la salud humana [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_University ]

Estaré formando el personal de la UNU, que es nuestro partner en Asia. La UNU – IIGH se encargará de formar los profesionales de la salud locales en el uso de GNU Health, el Sistema libre de Gestión Hospitalaria y de Información de Salud.

Como he dicho en otro blog, este es otro ejemplo de como el Software Libre puede aprovechar los recursos para ayudar los países en desarrollo. Mi agradecimiento al Sr. Nurhizam Safie Mohd Satar, quien encabeza el proyecto de integración de GNU Health (AKA Medical) en United Nations University – International Institute for Global Health (IIGH).

Este esfuerzo en común aumentará el numero de médicos utilizando el Software Libre y todos nos aprovecharemos de sus valiosos comentarios.

Tenemos grandes noticias para los defensores del Software Libre !!

Hemos empezado a trabajar en la ampliación de MEDICAL en apoyo de Tryton ERP. Tryton es un ERP con una gran filosofía del Software Libre, no sólo por tener el código fuente libre si no también para tener una política de NO LOCK-IN. Esto es lo que vamos a conseguir:

 
– Libertad de elección: ahora el usuario tendrá total libertad en el Sistema Operativo, Base de Datos o ERP. El usuario podrá elegir entre OpenERP o Tryton.

– Upgrades Garantizados: MEDICAL debe basarse en una arquitectura que permita al usuario actualizar su infraestructura. Los usuarios y los centros de salud deben poder contar con las herramientas de actualización y documentación para actualizar el sistema operativo, base de datos y ERP sin costo si así lo desean. Es por eso que lo vemos en GNU / Linux, PostgreSQL y Tryton. Este esquema garantiza que el usuario final tenga la versión más actualizada de MEDICAL.

– Independencia del proveedor: Nosotros, como comunidad, para el futuro de MEDICAL (o de cualquier otra solución de software libre) no podemos depender de un único proveedor o de un grupo de proveedores. MEDICAL no pertenece a Thymbra. MEDICAL es parte de una organización sin fines de lucro: GNU Solidario, que no se puede comprar y no puede caer en manos de especuladores.

– Volver a las raíces: Tenemos que volver a los orígenes del software libre. Como ya he dicho, no se trata sólo de “código abierto“, sino también de comunidad y ética.

Es por eso que ahora creo que tenemos el escenario perfecto para la libertad de elección, la independencia del proveedor, políticas de NO LOCK IN, comunidad y  evolución. Estos factores garantizan la continuidad de MEDICAL para la versión actual y para todas las próximas.

Por supuesto vamos a seguir desarrollando MEDICAL para que tenga la misma funcionalidad en todos los ámbitos (OpenERP, Tryton, GNU / Linux, FreeBSD …).

Hoy es un gran día para MEDICAL y para el Software Libre !

I have great news for the Free Software advocates.

We have started working in extending MEDICAL to support the Tryton ERP. Tryton is a great ERP with a solid free software philosophy, not only for releasing the source code, but by having NO LOCK-IN policies. So this is what we will achieve

–  Freedom of choice : Now the user will have complete freedom in Operating System, Database or ERP . The user will be able to choose from OpenERP or Tryton.

– Guarantee Upgrades : MEDICAL must rely on an architecture that allows the user to upgrade their infrastructure. The users and health centers should have the upgrade tools and documentation to update the operating system, database and ERP at no cost if they choose to do. Today we see that concept in GNU/Linux, Postgresql and Tryton. This schema guarantees that the end user has the best and most updated MEDICAL version, as well as the underlining components.

In this sense, we, as a community, will always be vigilant to any lock-in strategy in the underlying software (operating system, database or ERP) that could compromise its sustainability.

Many organizations around the world have chosen MEDICAL to improve the lives of the underprivileged. This community keeps growing because not only because of its technical capabilities, but also because of the free software philosophy behind it.

– Vendor independence : We, as a community, can NOT depend on a single vendor or group of vendors for the future of MEDICAL (or any free software solution for that matter). MEDICAL does not belong to Thymbra. MEDICAL is part of a non-for-profit organization, GNU Solidario, which can not be bought or fall into speculators hands. MEDICAL is a public good.

– Back to the roots : We need to get back to the origins of Free Software. As I said, this is not about only “open source”, but about community and ethics.

I believe that today we have the perfect scenario of freedom of choice, vendor independence, no lock-in policies of any type, community and evolution. These factors guarantee the sustainability of MEDICAL for the current and all the next installations around the world.
 
We will of course keep on developing MEDICAL so it will have the same functionality in all the environments (OpenERP, Tryton, GNU/Linux, FreeBSD…).

Today is a great day for MEDICAL and for Free Software.

III International Workshop on e-Health in Emerging Economies

The International Workshop on e-Health in Emerging Economies – IWEEE – is a biannual congress held in Canary Islands, Spain and in Brazil.
Because of their geographical locations, Canary Islands links Africa, Europe and the Americas, while Brazil concentrates on the Latin America reality.

This year we have been kindly invited by Medetel to host the 3rd IWEEE workshop in Luxembourg. We are honoured and grateful to Medetel for the invitation, and there will be a special edition in Luxembourg.

Medical 1.0.0 release

Luis Falcón is pleased to announce the Medical 1.0.0 release. After more than 2 years we get the first general availability version of Medical, the Free Health and Hospital Information System.

Thanks to all of you who have committed your talent and your time to make a system that can improve the lives of people all over the world, no matter their economical status.

Medical is now installed in many places and countries, from Primary care centers in Argentina, to the United Nations University, to Hospitals in Indonesia or Africa, to name only a few.

Now with the base system settled, we will start to add new functionality in the 1.1 (development) series. Many exciting features and specialities are coming this year : Pediatrics, ophthalmology, epidemiology, nutrition, oncology, cardiology, neurology …. all for free and available to all health professionals around the globe

Today MEDICAL optimizes the promotion of health and the prevention of the disease, by having a holistic view of the patient, her family, socioeconomic status, lifestyle and clinical history. It also allows the health center to manage its resources, and the ministry of health to improve the health campaigns. Used properly, MEDICAL is a great public health tool.

Finally, thanks to the Government of the European Community, for publishing MEDICAL in their Public Software Portal, as well as our Brazilian friends, who have published MEDICAL at the Portal do Software Público Brasileiro.

The United Nations University (UNU) has adopted MEDICAL

United Nations University – International Institute for Global Health (IIGH)  ( http://www.unu.edu ) has joined the MEDICAL community. MEDICAL will offer them an online teaching resource for a Hospital Information System (HIS).

GNU Solidario and UNU are now working together in specific areas, such as the documentation process. GNU Solidario will also work with UNU in the installation of a demo server.

This is yet another great example of how free software can leverage the resources to help the developing countries. Many thanks to Mr Nurhizam Safie Mohd Satar who is leading the MEDICAL integration project at the United Nations University – International Institute for Global Health (IIGH).

This common effort will increase the amount of physicians using Free Software, and we will all benefit with their valuable feedback.

I take the opportunity to thank the United Nations and their Development Program – UNDP – ( http://www.undp.org) , since it’s been supporting our mission since 2009. Mr Raul Zambrano, Senior Policy Advisor on ICT and Governance for the UNDP, was one of the lecturers at IWEEE (http://www.iweee.org)  2010 in Las Palmas.

LUXEMBURGO: ABRIL 6-8, 2011

Nos estamos preparando para la 3ra edición de IWEEE : Conferencia Internacional de eHealth en Economías Emergentes

Este año la Sociedad Internacional de eHealth y Telemedicina (isfteh) nos invitó para celebrar IWEEE en Luxemburgo, en el marco de Medetel durante los días 6 al 8 de Abril del presente año.

IWEEE ya está dando frutos. Como ejemplo, el gobierno de Paraguay ha comenzado a migrar sus regiones sanitarias a software libre después de la segunda edición celebrada en Foz de Iguazú, Brasil.

Como en anteriores ediciones, habrá presentaciones, discusiones y mesas redondas llevadas a cabo por un grupo multi-disciplinario que nos relatarán la realidad de sus sociedades, y posibles medidas para mejorar la educación y salud de sus pueblos.
